About Handmade Glass

The design possibilities of glass are endless. Handmade glass beads are also known as lamp beads.

Glass rods or canes are melted over gas fuelled torches. Their holes are made by copper wire, which are dissolved in nitric acid once the bead is made. Previously gas lamps were used, hence the name lamp beads. The beads are then decorated by “painting” trails of molten glass from smaller canes to create unique pieces of art. Their beauty, therefore, makes them a great choice for the focal point in your jewellery, or simply as an additional accent.

“Working in collaboration with European glass artists has made me appreciate the great workmanship, skill and imagination involved in producing them.” Christine Smalley

As like all individually handcrafted beads, slight variations in hole size and decoration may be apparent, however the quality and detail of these beads is exceptional.
